I established OnlineTrainingConsultancy in 2020, at a time when training providers and organisations were faced with the challenge of moving from the classroom to online and blended learning environments. Based in Wicklow, Ireland, I specialise in supporting organisations with online and blended learning.
My background is in technology. I worked in the technology sector for more than 20 years before moving into training and consultancy. This experience has given me a good understanding of both the opportunities technology can bring to learning and, importantly, its limitations.
Technology on its own does not make blended learning effective. Training providers also need to consider how programmes are designed, how trainers are supported, how learners engage with the programme and how quality is maintained.
Today, much of my consultancy work is focused on helping training providers develop effective blended learning provision, including supporting organisations preparing for QQI approval and programme validation.
I continue to work directly as a trainer alongside my consultancy work. This is important to me. It means that the advice and support I provide is grounded in the practical experience of working with learners and delivering training in classroom, online and blended learning environments.
My experience in technology continues to influence how I approach learning. I am passionate about blended learning and about how technology, used appropriately, can enhance learning, support learners and create a better overall learning experience. My interest has never been in technology for its own sake.
The question is not simply which learning platform or technology an organisation should use. The more important question is how the different elements work together to best support the learner and the learning experience.
Learning design, technology, quality assurance, governance, trainer capability and learner support all have a part to play. When these elements work together, they create a stronger and more effective learning experience.
My approach is therefore practical. I work with organisations to understand where they are now, what they need to achieve and what needs to be put in place to get there.
